Another 30/30 HubPages Challenge

Earlier this year, after starting to build hubs in earnest on Hubpages.com, I accepted the “HubChallenge.”  This was essentially self-motivational challenge to build 30 hubs in 30 days.

Fortunately, I was able to complete the challenge.  More to the point, it seemed to have a profound effect on my earnings from that site, with income going from a little over $2 at the end of January to about $61 by the end of March.

Hoping to duplicate that initial success, I plan to accept another 30-hubs-in-30-days challenge for the month of June.  (As before, this means building an average of one hub per day.)  Ideally, I’m hoping that the completion of a second Hubchallenge will give another impressive boost to my earnings.

As before, there’s no guarantee that I’ll complete the challenge.  (Thankfully, there’s also no punishment for failing, just as there’s no reward for success.)  Wish me luck, and keep your fingers crossed!

April 2012 Earnings Report

I had what I would categorize as another good month in terms of earnings.  Again, a good chunk of the revenue came from places other than adsense, so I’m happy to see that my efforts at diversification are paying off.  The breakdown for the month is as follows:

AdSense:  $67.89 ( +3% compared to last month’s $65.91)
HubPages:  $44.49 (-27.6% compared last month’s $61.42)
Squidoo:  $1.18 (-49.8% compared to last month’s $2.35)
Affiliate sales:  $13.70 (+348% over last month’s $3.06)
Book sales:  $0.61 (earnings last month were $0.0)
Total:   $127.87 (-3.7% compared to last month’s $132.74)

 Year-to-Date Income:  $392.48

AdSense is once more on top of the heap in terms of where the majority of my income is coming from.  Still, there is enough coming from other sources that I don’t feel as dependent on AdSense as I once might have.   Having decreased for the first time last month, revenue from WebAnswers resumed form and rose up to $59.05.

I was absolutely wild about the affiliate sales. It was only $13.70, but I would certainly love to have regular contributions from that arena.   Also, for the second consecutive month I had earnings from Squidoo.  It was almot a 50% decline from the previous month, but something is better than nothing (plus I’m stoked just to be earning something there).

My earnings on HubPages declined, but I’m still very excited.  I am still quite satisfied with the pace and growth of my earnings on the site.

April saw me achieve another book sale.  It’s not much ($0.61), but passive income is passive income.

Overall, I think April was another healthy month in terms of earnings.  I’m still shooting for a goal of $5 per day, which for May 2012 would mean $155 total by month’s end.  As usual, here are the sites and resources I’m using as the foundation for building my own passive income streams:

***Please note that many of the links above are affiliate links, which means that I will earn a commission if you purchase products or services via the links I have provided.  More information about these products and services is available on my Resources page.

As I say every month,  Q&A site WebAnswers is still the best earner for me on an overall basis, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to start earning online.  Also, don’t forget about the article-writing, revenue-sharing sites – HubPages, Squidoo, etc.

Also, to the extent that you are engaged in the pursuit of passive income yourself, don’t forget to promote your efforts – especially  via backlinking with social media sites, like Redgage.com  (which also pays you) and Socialadr, a bookmarking service that gets you lots of free backlinks.  (In fact, you can find more on backlinking in my article on How to Get Hundreds of Free Backlinks.)  Of course, not everything you utilize needs to be free; some items are well worth the price  – e.g., Market Samurai.

Get Backlinks and Earnings with RedGage

A short time ago, I posted an article on Where to Get Hundreds of Free Backlinks.  In addition to those, I wanted to pass along info about a site where you can post links to your articles and get paid for them:   Redgage.com.

RedGage is a site where you can backlink and promote your articles, blogs, pictures, etc.  In other words, it will allow you to drive additional traffic to your content.  That alone would be quite valueable, but there’s more.

RedGage also lets you earn via links to the content that you post.  (You get paid based on views.)  Personally, I’ll take free money any day of the week, so this is a win-win in my book.  On top of that, there are additional ways to earn, such as via the RedGage Daily Contest.   (I won $25 from the Daily Contest – twice! – this month for a total of $50!)

In short, you can start creating great backlinks for your content as well as earning income by joining Redgage.com today.

March 2012 Earnings Report

I was fortunate enough to benefit from an impressive increase in earnings during March that resulted in me having my best month ever since getting on the passive income merry-go-round about 6 months ago.  Here is the breakdown for the month:

AdSense:  $65.91 ( +4.6% compared to last month’s $63.00)
HubPages:  $61.42 ( +653.6% over last month’s $8.15)
Squidoo:  $2.35 (earnings last month were $0.00)
Affiliate sales:  $3.06 (earnings last month were $0.0)
Book sales:  $0.0 (earnings last month were $1.79)
Total:   $132.74 ( +82% compared to last month’s $72.94)

 Year-to-Date Income:  $264.61

For the first time, the majority of my earnings did not come from AdSense.  Running the numbers, approximatel 49.65% of the income came from AdSense, while 50.35% came from elswhere.  It’s a small distinction, but I’m actually over the moon about it, because it indiciates that I’m not a one-trick pony that is totally dependent on AdSense for revenue.  (Don’t get me wrong, I want as much AdSense revenue as possible, but I also want to be diversified in case I have a weak month with respect to AdSense.)  Revenue from WebAnswers decreased for the first time (down to $58.95).  Another first:  WebAnswers was not the top-earning site for me – HubPages was.  Again, these are things I’m happy about because it shows that the diversification of my eforts is paying off.

I was happy to once again have some affiliate sales.  (I’ve got to make that a bigger part of my revenue picture.)  I was also giddy about finally having earnings from Squidoo.  Let’s hope I can increase those earnings at the same pace as I did for HubPages.

Speaking of HubPages, I can’t help but be excited about the gains there.  I clearly had a very good month, but there’s no way I can maintain that kind of growth on a regular basis.   Still, it does give an indication of the potential available on HubPages.

Sadly, no book sales in March.  As always, I am still looking to remedy that situation as soon as time becomes available to do so.

Overall, I think March was a very good month.  I haven’t yet reached my first stepping-stone of $5 per day, but I’m getting close.  of course now, the goal for April is to earn $5/day or $150 total by month’s end.  As usual, here are the sites and resources I’m using as the foundation for building my own passive income streams:

Passive Income Ideas: Publishing an eBook

For those who may be following my monthly earnings reports, you will notice that I occasionally generate a tiny amount of income from the sales of books.  I have a couple of books currently published that would probably do better in sales if I put a little more effort into marketing them.

Regardless, book publishing is indeed one of the truest forms of passive income out there.  You do all the work on the front end (writing)  and then publish in hopes of having income generated for years by the sale of your work.   But how do you get to that point?  How do you get your book published and in position to be bought?  Truth be told there are several methods of self-publishing you can use:

Lulu.com
Lulu is a publishing site that allows writers to publish their work in hard copy or ebook form for free.  As the writer, you select your own price point to determine how much profit to make.

Smashwords
Smashwords is another publisher you can use, but only for ebooks.  As with most other self-publishing sites these days, publication and distribution is free.

Needless to say, there are many other publishers out there you can use, but the point is that almost everyone has at least one great story to tell, and now there’s a format that allows you to do it for practically no cost, and with the possibility of earning tremendous returns.

February 2012 Earnings Report

First of all, I am publishing these earnings extraordinarily late.  Part of the reason is that I had to go out of town for business, but I also wrestled with how to report some of the income.  For instance, I apparently had some book sales in months past for which the royalties are only just being added to my account, so I had to determine whether to report them in the current month or go back and amend prior reports.  Since I don’t want to be constantly amending past reports, I decided to report them when they are received in my account.

Moving on to the the meat-and-potatoes of this report, earnings in February 2012 increased from the prior month, per the following  breakdown:

AdSense:  $63.00 ( +7% compared to last month’s $58.93)
HubPages:  $8.15 ( +206% over last month’s $2.66)
Affiliate sales:  $0.0 (earnings last month were also $0.0)
Book sales:  $1.79 (earnings last month were $0.0)
Total:   $72.94 ( +24% compared to last month’s $58.93)

 Year-to-Date Income:  $131.87

As in the past, the majority of the AdSense revenue ($61.11) came from WebAnswers, making it my top-performing revenue source for the fourth month in a row.  The remainder of the AdSense revenue came from article-writing sites.

For the second consecutive month there were no affiliate sales.  I’m disappointed, but not discouraged.  For me, this just highlights the need to have diverse streams of income, because you never know when one will dry up.  (Needless to say, I will continue looking for ways to improve affiliate sales.)

I am quite pleased with the HubPages revenue.  As I mentioned in January’s report, I signed up for the 30-Hubs-in-30-Days Challenge (which I was able to complete) and it paid big dividends in the form of increased traffic and revenue for my hubs.

Finally, I had a few more book sales.  As I’ve mentioned before, the income isn’t really anything to brag about at this point, but it’s one of those things I’m actually proud of.   Obviously (as I say every month), I need to put some more effort into promoting these.

All in all, I’m rather happy with what I’ve been able to achieve in five short months of pursuing passive income.  I’m still trying to hit my goal of earning $5/day, and I honestly believe I can get there soon.

Anyway, my goal now for March 2012 is to earn $5/day or a total of $155 by the end of the month.  As always, here are the sites and resources I’m using as the foundation for building my own passive income streams:

***Please note that many of the links above are affiliate links, which means that I will earn a commission if you purchase products or services via the links I have provided.  More information about these products and services is available on my Resources page.

Looking back,  Q&A site WebAnswers is still earning the most money for me, and I recommend it first and foremost for anyone looking to start earning online.  Also, don’t forget about the article-writing, revenue-sharing sites  – HubPages, Squidoo, etc.

Also, to the extent that you are engaged in the pursuit of passive income yourself, don’t forget to promote your efforts – especially  via backlinking with social media sites, like Socialadr, a bookmarking service that gets you lots of free backlinks.  (In fact, you can find more on backlinking in my article on How to Get Hundreds of Free Backlinks.)  Of course, not everything you utilize needs to be free; some items are well worth the price  – e.g., Market Samurai.

Hundreds of Backlinks You Can Get for Free

Everybody knows how the backlinks daisy-chain goes:  You need backlinks in order to get a higher ranking on Google.  Ranking higher on Google usually leads to more traffic.  More traffic usually translates into more dollars.  Thus, backlinks should be one of the major components of any marketing plan for your blog or website.  With that in mind, I’ve listed below some places where you can get free backlinks.

OnlyWire.com
Everyone knows that posting backlinks on social bookmarking sites is one of the most tiresome and time-consuming activities you have to engage in as part of article marketing.  But what if you could post to approximately 50 of the top social media sites (e.g., Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.) in just a few minutes?  That’s the beauty of OnlyWire.  Rather than spending hours every day building backlinks, you can do it automatically in one shot.  Not bad, huh?

OnlyWire offers a free trial subscription of 300 submissions to social bookmarking sites.  There’s no time limit;  the free trial stands until you use up your 300 submissions, at which point you can decide whether you want to get a paid subscription, or go back to posting backlinks manually.

SocialAdr.com
SocialAdr is probably one of the best sites for getting free backlinks, but it has a novel format.  You agree to post backlinks for other people on your accounts at various social bookmarking sites such as Twitter and the like.  In this manner, your earn credits which are utilized by having other people post backlinks to your sites on their social bookmarking accounts.  In other words, you will get other people providing backlinks to your blogs and sites.  And it’s totally free!  (Although there is an option for a paid subscription, which will provide a lot more backlinks.)

Backlinks Genie.com
Backlinks Genie is an automatic backlinks-builder that specializes in multi-tiered backlinking.  Basically, this consists of having a huge number of backlinks on the bottom or third tier, which in turn point back to several sites on the second tier.  The second-tier sites all point back to your primary site, which resides on the first tier.  This is actually a proven strategy that has been suggested many times all over the internet for increasing your site’s rank and traffic.  A free one-month trial is available for you to take the service for a test-drive.

SocialMonkee.com
SocialMonkee is a totally free backlinks site that will automatically build 25 backlinks every day to any URL you submit.  moreover, they have numerous sites they submit to, so there’s almost no chance that your URL will be submitted to the exact same sites every day.  There’s only one caveat here:  the free version of SocialMonkee only allows you to submit the same URL once.  (Upgrading to a paid subscription will allow you to submit to more sites, and allow you to submit the same URL more than once.

24:7 Backlinks.com
24:7 backlinks gives you 1000 free backlinks.  Moreover, you can designate the URLs and keywords that you want to focus on.

Because backlinks are so important, you shouldn’t pass up an opportunity to get as many as possible, including those available through the free trial offers above.

January 2012 Earnings Report

Update:  Somehow,  I completely forgot to include the $2.66 that I earned from HubPages in January.  Thus, the monthly (and year-to-date) income should be $58.93.

_________________________________________________________

January 2012 earnings took a dip from last month, but a post-holiday drop-off was anticipated.  Naturally, I’m not wild about the decrease in earnings, but with only about three months of income under my belt I don’t have any historical data for comparative purposes.  (In other words, aside from strictly looking at the numbers, I can’t determine whether the decrease shoud be viewed as “good” or “bad” – or anything other than “expected.”)  That being the case, I choose to be optimistic in my outlook.  Here’s the breakdown:

AdSense:  $56.27 (-13% compared to last month’s $64.79)
Affiliate sales:  $0.0 (earnings last month were $60.81)
Book sales:  $0.0 (earnings last month were $2.66)
Total:   $56.27 ( -56% compared to last month’s $128.26)

 Year-to-Date Income:  $56.27

Again, the bulk of the AdSense revenue ($55.02) came from WebAnswers, making it my top-performing revenue source for the third consecutive month.  The remainder of the revenue came from article-writing sites.

Affiliate sales diminished, but I’m not terribly upset because it was expected.  The trick now is to build back up.

Last but not least, I did not record any royalties from book sales, but as before I haven’t put much effort into promotion.   I will try to put some additional effort into this and see if sales can be ramped up a little (I know, I know:  I say that every month, but this time I mean it!)

In retrospect, I’m still happy with where I am at the moment.  Although I haven’t yet hit my goal of earning $5/day, I’ve been fortunate enough to make money every month since I started; now I’ve just got to find ways to start expanding my little fiefdom here, and see if I can make it into an empire.  I’m having a little luck in that I’ve stepped up my efforts in some areas where I’ve been neglectful in the past  (see my 30-Hubs-in-30-Days Challenge).  Hopefully this will add meaningfully to the bottom line.

Anyway, my goal now for February 2012 is to earn $5/day or a total of $145 by the end of the month.  For those of you keeping track, here are the sites and resources I’m using as the foundation for building my own passive income streams:

***Please note that many of the links above are affiliate links, which means that I will earn a commission if you purchase products or services via the links I have provided.  More information about these products and services is available on my Resources page.

As before, the Q&A site WebAnswers is still the earnings champ as far as I’m concerned, and I recommend them as the first stop for anyone looking for a venue to begin earning online.  I’m also a firm believer in article-writing, so any of the revenue-sharing sites  – InfoBarrel, Bukisa, Seekyt, etc. – are also great.

Last but not least, I’ve removed Shetoldme.com from my list of resources.  I don’t have any issues with the site, but they are now a paid service and I’m simply trying to minimize the number of resources I use that have an out-of-pocket cost.  (Some, of course, are well worth the price  – e.g., Market Samurai.)  On the other hand, I’ve added Socialadr, a bookmarking service that gets you lots of free backlinks.

The 30-Hubs-in-30-Days Challenge

Any of my loyal readers will recognize that Hubpages.com is one of the sites identified on my Passive Income Resources page as a potential source of income.  With HubPages, you build individual web pages called “hubs”, with each focusing on a particular topic of your choice.  However, much like article-writing (or any other skilled profession), repetition is often the key to getting better.  Enter the HubChallenge.

In essence, accepting the HubChallenge means you commit to building 30 hubs in 30 days.  Just to be clear, there is no punishment (for failure) or reward (for success); it’s really more of a way to push yourself to create more hubs, become better at it, and hopefully see a rise in income.   (Please see the Resources page if you need more detail on how HubPages are monetized.)

Personally, I’ve been somewhat neglectful with respect to HubPages.  I really didn’t do much on the site for the first two months after joining because I was focused on getting my niche sites up.  (I only put up one stinking hub – and I still made 20 cents!)   It wasn’t until this month that I really decided to focus my efforts.  Accepting the HubChallenge earlier this week (Jan. 23, to be precise) is part of my recommitment to Hubpages.

Of course, 30-hubs-in-30-days means building an average of one hub per day.  At the moment, I am running true to form and already find myself behind just a few days into the challenge.  (I will have to make it up “on the road.”)  However, I will say this:  I built a few hubs between the beginning of the month and the day I accepted the challenge and saw my earnings start to increase.  There was another increase when I started building my 30 challenge hubs, so if nothing else I anticipate having increased revenue from my efforts, regardless of the success or failure of the primary goal.  Wish me luck!

December 2011 Earnings Report

My earnings for December reflected another nice increase.  While I’m certainly not breaking the bank, I think this is a great return for a guy who didn’t really know anything about earning income online just 3 months ago.  (Again, I just got started with all of this stuff towards the end of October 2011.)  The breakdown is as follows:

AdSense:  $64.79 (+5.4% over last month’s $61.48)
Affiliate sales:  $60.81 (+2239% over last month’s $2.60)
Book sales:  $2.66 ( +660% over last month’s $0.35)
Total:   $128.26 ( +99% over last month’s $64.43)

About 3/4 of the AdSense revenue came from WebAnswers, making it my top-performing revenue source for the second month in a row.  Roughly 1/6 of the AdSense numbers came via my niche site, with the rest coming from article sites like InfoBarrel and Seekyt.

Needless to say, the affiliate income was great, but it really fell off a cliff around the middle of the month.  However, I had expected sales to slow as we got closer to Christmas, so it wasn’t a total surprise.

Finally, there were royalties from sales of my two self-published books that came to a grand total of $2.66.   (Hey, every little bit helps.)   Hmmm…  I really should do more to promote my books, because I’m really not doing any marketing for them at the moment.

Looking back, I’m both happy and disappointed with my December results.  I’m happy because this really is a nice rate of growth that I’ve experienced, and if it could grow like this every month I’d die a happy man.  However, I’m disappointed because I fell short of my goal for the month, which was to earn income of $5/day (that would have resulted in income of $155 for the month).  This is somewhat my own fault, because I spent most of the month constructing a new niche site and practically neglected everything else.  In the future, I’ll try to take a more balanced approach in terms of my online endeavors and give all of my “kids” some love and attention.

Anyway, my goal now for January 2012 is to earn $5/day or a total of $155 by the end of the month.  For those of you keeping track, here are the sites I’m using as the foundation for building my own passive income streams:

***Please note that many of the links above are affiliate links, which means that I will earn a commission if you purchase products or services via the links I have provided.  More information about these products and services is available on my Resources page.

As I’ve stated all along, the Q&A site WebAnswers i sstill the earnings champ in my book, and I recommend them as the first stop for anyone looking for a venue to begin earning online.  I’m also a firm believer in article-writing, so any of the revenue-sharing sites  – InfoBarrel, Bukisa, Seekyt, etc. – are also great.
